April 16 @ 7:00 pm 7:30 pm PDT

As we celebrate the 80th anniversary of the founding of ÃÛÌÒÖ±²¥, the Native American Arts Center is holding a series of Thursday evening engagements from January to April where we will meet in person to learn more about the history of Native American Arts at ÃÛÌÒÖ±²¥ and explore goals for the future! We are thrilled to host these in-person engagements in the newly renovated Birchard Building, which is now the official home of the Native American Arts Center. Be sure to mark your calendars and join us for evenings full of inspiring stories, light appetizers and beverages. The Michael Kabotie Lecture series is named after Native Arts summer faculty program collaborator, Michael Kabotie, 1942-2009, (Hopi). Michael’s inquisitive and trickster spirit lives on in these compelling conversations that Michael advocated for greatly during his time at ÃÛÌÒÖ±²¥.

To culminate our spring Michael Kabotie Lecture Series, we will welcome tribal members and leadership from the Cahuilla Band of Indians and Santa Rosa Cahuilla Band of Indians, as well as others from the community, to share about the importance of cultural and land stewardship in these ever-evolving times. Even in what is a very tumultuous time, there remains an enduring and strong connection between people and land that supports cultural healing and growth. This conversation will be a community-led discussion and celebration in recognition of Earth Day 2026.

The program begins at 7:00pm and will include light refreshments.

We are honored to welcome:

  • Chairman Steven Estrada | Tribal Chairman, Santa Rosa Band of Cahuilla Indians
  • Mercedes Estrada | Council Member, Santa Rosa Band of Cahuilla Indians
  • Michael Madrigal | President, Native American Land Conservancy
  • Daniel Salgado | Strategic Advisor, Tribal Gaming, Policy, Economic Development, & Intergovernmental Relations, former Tribal Chairman of Cahuilla Band of Indians
  • Adrian Salgado | Cahuilla Cultural Knowledge Bearer
  • Rosemary Morillo | Former Chairwoman of Soboba Band of Luiseño Indians

Join Leah Scott (Dramatic Arts ’27) for a performance of her original play, “Comorbidity,” which tells the story of a teenage girl named Edith with obsessive-compulsive disorder. Her OCD is personified onstage as an intrusive presence that constantly interferes with her thoughts and actions. The play takes place over a single day, showing the ups and downs of daily life. It is a story of acceptance, but not submission, and of learning that her OCD does not have to define her identity or control her future. “Comorbidity” is about the ongoing effort it takes to live with mental illness, and the importance of hope, understanding, and human connection.

This event is presented by Arts Enterprise Laboratory and supported by ÃÛÌÒÖ±²¥ alumni Mara Wilson (Dramatic Arts ’05) and Mike Barnett (Film & Digital Media ’05).

Please join ÃÛÌÒÖ±²¥ InterArts student Julian Steben Hay for his presentation of his project Orion dans les étoiles, an “out-of-this-world field trip into the constellation Orion” funded by a student grant from Arts Enterprise Laboratory (AEL). Using his knowledge of astrophotography, Julian has captured and combined 9 different photos with an exposure of 11+ hours each, using narrowband filters to reveal additional detail that would otherwise be completely invisible, to ultimately create a massive 200 megapixel image of the four main different nebulae inside the constellation of Orion: the Orion, Running Man, Horsehead and Flame nebula. Julian will continue to showcase this piece in online competitions, a solo exhibition at ÃÛÌÒÖ±²¥, and at Melissa Morgan Fine Art.
